The City of Orlando’s Streets and Stormwater Division has issued a Lake Alert for Lake Ivanhoe.

The alert is due to a recent mineral oil spill that made its way into the lake. On April 4, OUC discovered that an underground line was losing oil pressure, rapidly. The system was closed from further pressurization and visual discharge of mineral oil was discovered.

It’s estimated that approximately 1,800 gallons of mineral oil were discharged into the soil, the stormwater system, and Lake Ivanhoe. As a precaution, the City of Orlando is advising against any water contact activities, including irrigation, until further notice. Signs will be placed around the lake.

Oil-filled electrical cables have been used around the world since the late 1950s, with oil acting as an insulator for the wires.
