Grim Scene in Orlando as 12 of the City's Famed Swans Die, Sparking Bird Flu Fears

In the past week, 12 swans have been found dead at Orlando's famed Lake Eola Park, sparking fears of bird flu. Orlando's Lake Eola Park has seen 12 of its swans die, raising concerns about public safety at the park. The cause of these deaths is suspected to be bird flu, according to Orlando City Commissioner Patty Sheehan. Despite previous outbreaks of avian flu in 2024, a previous outbreak led to swan deaths. The virus, also known as highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI), can cause serious illness and death in birds and mammals if they come in close contact with infected animals. It is not known to be transmitted from human to human. The symptoms of bird flu include fever, fatigue, cough, muscle aches, sore throat, shortness of breath, and pneumonia.
