Westgate Resorts founder David Siegel on March 5 handed off his title as CEO to longtime company executive Jim Gissy.

Siegel will remain with the billion-dollar timeshare company as executive board chairman and president, and "will continue to lead all major decision-making" and maintaining the 42-year-old company's vision, said a March 28 news release.

Why this change in leadership matters

This is a seismic shift in leadership at one of Central Florida's biggest companies led by one of the region's well-known power executives. Westgate Resorts employs more than 4,700 workers.

As Westgate’s new CEO, Gissy is overseeing all aspects of the company’s operations, sales and marketing. He has been with the company since 1984 and most recently has served as senior executive vice president.

Siegel, via a prepared statement, called Gissy his right-hand man and friend. “Jim is an exceptional leader and I could not be happier to have him assume this role at my company.”

The release added that Siegel primarily is focused on finding ways to solve the ongoing opioid epidemic through the Victoria’s Voice Foundation, named in honor of his daughter who died of an overdose in 2015.

Siegel and Gissy couldn't be reached immediately for further comment.
